Summary

Hurley Elementary is a high-performing K-6 public school serving 574 students in the Visalia Unified School District, consistently earning top ratings for its strong academic results and exceptional student attendance.

Academically, Hurley stands out in the area, with student proficiency in English, math, and science significantly exceeding both district and state averages. For example, its math scores are nearly double the district average and far outpace nearby schools like Royal Oaks Elementary and Veva Blunt Elementary. The school also boasts an impressively low chronic absenteeism rate of 8.9%, which is less than half the rate of the district and many surrounding schools, indicating a strong, engaged school community. This success is achieved cost-effectively, with per-student spending lower than some lower-performing schools in the district.

Hurley has shown remarkable improvement since the pandemic, dramatically reducing absenteeism and boosting test scores across all student groups. While schools in the same neighborhood show wide variations in performance—from top performers like Oak Grove Elementary to struggling schools like Houston Elementary—Hurley consistently delivers high-quality education. The school's ability to achieve these results with a diverse student population makes it a standout for its effective educational practices and positive school culture.

Open Quote Unlike higher ranked elementary schools in Visalia (Royal Oaks, Oak Grove),
Hurley offers no motivational incentives for students regarding academic achievements. There are no honor roll, character, or other awards ceremonies.
(There are awards for fund raising)
As a result, Hurley academic achievement levels continue to steadily decline.
Considering most of the children derive from dual educated parents, and reside with both parents- makes these results are even more dramatic.
Most of the teachers are excellent. However, class sizes are larger than like schools in district, which seriously limits teacher's capabilities.
There is no program for GATE identified students. They are not challenged, but instead are required to assist "distracted/ misbehaving" classmates. This may be somewhat attributed to No Child Left Behind. Close Quote
