Summary

Mulcahy Middle is a public middle school serving 745 students in grades 5-8 within the Tulare City district, which faces broader educational challenges as it ranks in the bottom quartile of districts statewide.

Academically, the school is significantly underperforming, ranking in the 6th percentile in California with alarmingly low proficiency rates, especially in mathematics where only 5.74% of students are proficient—a rate roughly one-third of the district average and far below the state. This performance is notably weaker than other middle schools in the same district, such as Alpine Vista Middle, which has more than triple the math proficiency. The school serves a student population with very high economic need, with over 92% eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, which is the highest rate among all Tulare City middle schools.

While the school's chronic absenteeism is below the state average, it is higher than the district's. A notable bright spot is a dramatic recent improvement in performance for students in special education. Comparisons with schools in neighboring districts like Farmersville Unified and Visalia Unified, which serve similar demographics but achieve better outcomes, suggest district-level policies and resources may be significant factors in school performance.

Open Quote This school sucked. I attended it after moving to Tulare and they were absolutely behind in every subject. I went from Algebra2 (which I had an A in) to Pre-Algebra. The staff was ridiculous too. They obviously hated us. There were like 2 good teachers I had. I specifically remember some teachers always picking on specific Black kids too, or some that dressed like “gangbangers” without addressing the fact that it’s a style those kids grow up seeing, it didn’t have real meaning until the teachers gave it meaning. They label their students and are surprised they act out. Close Quote
