Summary

Edison Elementary is a K-5 public school serving 466 students in the Torrance Unified School District, consistently rated as a solidly above-average school within California.

The school has a remarkable strength in student attendance, with a chronic absenteeism rate of just 5.1%, which is significantly lower than the district and state averages and better than most nearby schools like Evelyn Carr Elementary and Mark Twain Elementary. Academically, Edison's test scores generally exceed state averages, and the school shows particular effectiveness in supporting English Language Learners and students with special needs. However, its statewide ranking has seen a recent decline, and academic performance trails higher-performing schools within its own district, such as Arlington Elementary and Lincoln Elementary.

Compared to schools in other districts, Edison operates cost-effectively, achieving competitive results with lower per-student spending than schools in the Lawndale Elementary district. Key areas for attention include a recent drop in test scores, a performance gap in upper-grade mathematics, and ensuring strong growth for all student groups. Overall, Edison is a school with a strong foundation of student engagement and effective support for diverse learners.

Open Quote We have been a part of the Edison Elementary family for 3 years now, and we have loved our experience. From the very first time we reached out to Principal Okazaki to express our interest in having our son attend, to the warm greetings by staff every morning, to the way our daughter was welcomed a year later, we have felt welcomed, valued, and very much a part of the Eagle family. The teachers are wonderful, caring and supportive, providing a nurturing and stimulating environment for our children to thrive, the staff know everyone by name and go out of their way to treat kids with care. The programming and events are thoughtfully planned (STEAM competitions, multicultural week, October family nights, movie nights are faves), offering diverse opportunities for learning and community engagement. The communication from the school is consistent and clear, ensuring that we as parents and families are in the loop. It’s no surprise that Edison was voted the best in South Bay—this school is truly a gem, and we feel fortunate to be part of it! Close Quote

Open Quote Edison Elementary is an amazing school with a diverse campus. The principal, Mrs. Okazaki is attentive and engages directly with the students and families. My children are eager to attend school everyday and always excited to participate in school sponsored activities. Ex: family fun night, harvest festival and STEM fairs. Open Quote We love Edison Elementary and are so happy to be part of it. The teachers and staff are always so helpful with queries or concerns you might have. Ms. Okazaki is a wonderful principal and we are so happy that she is an important part of the Edison family. Communicating with her or the staff it’s very easy. All the communication lines are always open! She teaches the kids about having good behavior characteristics and to show respect and kindness to the peers. The different online platforms used to communicate with parents is commendable. You can never miss any important information. We love our Edison family. Close Quote

Open Quote Located in a safe & quiet neighborhood. Kids are always happy and teachers are great - most have Masters Degree credentials. Love the fact that they are heavy on old school books and pencils style teaching and at the same time, this school is heavily invested in new technology each kid has a Chromebook in their classrooms. Starting as early as the 1st grade, they are taught how to type and learn internet, computer lingo, coding, and some even submit homework online. JUST AMAZING level of modern curriculum structure.
