Summary

Loyalton High is a small, high-performing public school serving grades 7–12 in rural Loyalton, California, with about 165 students in the Sierra-Plumas Joint Unified School District.

This school consistently ranks among the top high schools in the state, outperforming the nearest comparable school, Portola Junior/Senior High, in key areas. Loyalton High achieves a 100% graduation rate with a 0% dropout rate, significantly higher than Portola. Academically, students excel, particularly in science, where proficiency rates are over 10 points above the state average and far ahead of nearby schools. Math and English scores are also strong. Notably, the school accomplishes this with lower reported per-student spending than its neighbors, indicating efficient use of resources.

While Loyalton High's overall performance is a major strength, families should note a recent, sharp increase in chronic absenteeism, which the school is now addressing. Performance for specific groups of students can also vary from year to year. For context, the area's other local option, Beckwourth (Jim) High (Continuation), serves a different student population with very high needs. For families in this geographically isolated region, Loyalton High stands out as a consistently strong academic choice.

Open Quote The bathrooms are usually treated poorly by students and they often leave toilet paper on the floors aswell as despose of sanitary products incorrectly. The gym is probably haunted lol. They put 7th graders in highschool classes, but dont give this offer to 8th graders which I find very mean because I want to be above average but I cant be above average. You also need to sign a form in half the classrooms just to leave the classroom, no hall pass, just sign a paper. Teachers also make yu feel uncomfortable in many ways. My science teacher talks about my kpop boys to m and I feel weird because he has barely any idea what kpop even is. #Notrelatable. One teacher also said, and I quote "I dont get paid enough to deal with these students" which I find disrespectful because its her job to deal with us and if she doesnt she should choose a new job. The carpets are stained and the walls are very dirty. The teachers always have the air conditioning either too high or too low. The gym teachers overwork us and make us run against our will. The students vape and do drugs by campus and they get barely if any punishment. The sink water is too cold on my hands when I wash my hands after using the restroom aswell. They dont water the plant enough and it makes me sad because theyre all dying. lastly, The choir class is too loud, they disrupt the birds. BUT, other than that its an amazing school!
