Summary

Shandon Elementary serves 167 students in grades K–8 in the small community of Shandon, within Shandon Joint Unified. Its 2025–26 all-grade proficiency was below California’s in English language arts (ELA), math and science, and chronic absenteeism was higher than both state and district rates. The clearest academic concern is science: just 17% of students were proficient, 19 percentage points below the state.

Compared with nearby schools, Shandon’s all-grade ELA and math results each ranked eighth among 10 schools with reported scores, while its science result was the lowest among the eight with reported results. Its ELA proficiency was 37%, versus 49% statewide and 39% in the district; math was 24%, below the state’s 38% but above the district’s 21%. Science was 17%, compared with 36% statewide and 27% in the district. There are brighter grade-level results: third-grade ELA proficiency was 63%, higher than every nearby result reported, including Kermit King Elementary’s 41%; fourth-grade math was 50%, the highest reported nearby result for that grade. But results were weaker after grade 4: sixth-grade math was 9%, versus 37% statewide. Nearby all-grade comparisons include schools with different grade spans, and some results were suppressed.

Scores have improved over the longer term, although progress has not been steady: from 2022–23 to 2025–26, ELA rose 12 percentage points, math 10 and science 10, while science fell 9 points in the latest year. Chronic absenteeism also improved from 55% in 2021–22 to 27% in 2025–26, but remained above the state’s 18% and the district’s 24%. SchoolDigger rates Shandon at the 42nd statewide percentile, or 2 stars, up from the 3rd percentile in 2021–22. Its 16.1 students per teacher is the second-lowest ratio among 11 nearby schools, and 65% of students were free/reduced-lunch eligible in 2024–25. SchoolDigger’s student-group rankings also point to stronger relative standing for some groups: Hispanic Students ranked at the 78th percentile and Low Socio Economic Status Students at the 69th in 2025–26, compared with the school’s overall 42nd percentile.
