Summary

Almond Acres Charter Academy is a K-8 charter school in Paso Robles serving about 478 students, but it has experienced a significant and concerning drop in its statewide academic ranking over the past few years, now placing in the bottom quarter of all schools.

Key challenges for the school include a high rate of chronic student absenteeism, which is above both the state and local averages, and a notable performance gap where male students are scoring far lower than female students. While the school spends less per student than most traditional public schools in the Paso Robles Joint Unified district, it has a higher student-teacher ratio. Despite these overall struggles, Almond Acres has a clear strength: its program for Special Education students is exceptionally effective, ranking among the best in the state.

When compared to nearby schools, Almond Acres' declining trajectory stands out. Schools in the higher-performing Templeton Unified district, like Templeton Elementary, maintain strong rankings. Even within Paso Robles, schools with similar student demographics, such as Kermit King Elementary, achieve much higher academic results, suggesting that effective strategies for supporting students exist within the local area.

Open Quote This school focuses on character building-heart, body, mind, and soul. Unfortunately, it's at the expense of learning ELA, science, math, and history. Students who transfer out or move on to 9th grade are very behind and not on track with other schools despite getting decent marks at AACA. The standard is very low. There is no real curriculum. Teacher and staff turnaround is off the chart. If a teacher quits mid year, they just combine classes or have a random staff member "teach." They didn't even have enough kids attending this year to have an 8th grade. Poor behavior is rarely dealt with and there are a lot of issues as many students with severe behavior issues end up here after not thriving at a traditional school. This school has some good ideas, but poor execution and lack of transparency. Admin does not reply to or follow through about concerns parents have. The school seems to only care about appearance and enrollement making promises it can't keep. I wouldn't believe anything that admin says as they have proven to be dishonest, even towards their staff-hence the vast turnaround. Close Quote
