Summary

Jim Thorpe Fundamental is a K-5 elementary school serving 738 students in the Santa Ana Unified school district, standing out as a strong performer within its local context.

Academically, Jim Thorpe significantly outperforms other nearby Santa Ana Unified schools, with proficiency rates in English and Math that are 44% to 76% higher than the district average, and it shares this success with the other "Fundamental" school in the area, Greenville Fundamental Elementary. The school shows particular strength in supporting homeless students and English Learners, and it maintains an exceptionally low chronic absenteeism rate of 7.9%, which is less than half the average for its district and state. However, it's important to note that while Jim Thorpe excels within its district, schools just across the boundary in the Newport-Mesa Unified district, such as California Elementary, achieve higher overall rankings, highlighting a disparity between districts.

Parents should be aware of some recent trends, including a decline in the school's statewide ranking and concerning drops in performance for female students and those in special education. Despite these challenges and operating with a higher student-teacher ratio and lower per-student spending than some peers like Taft Elementary, Jim Thorpe continues to deliver better academic results than most surrounding Santa Ana Unified schools, suggesting its structured "Fundamental" model is an effective approach for the community.

Open Quote Worst experience having my child go to this school. Teacher is very rude and non communicative. Talking to principal does not help because they end up siding with teachers as opposed to listening to parent's concerns. Tried discussing a matter about my child and teacher had even hung phone up on me and spoke to me very disrespectfully. They do not treat each child as an individual and expect them to all be at same level. I understand that there are rules and they expect a certain standard but they take it to a whole other level. Regret putting my child here, thought we would be getting an excellent education because of school ratings but instead was an awful experience. I have also voiced my concerns to a few people and they have also heard from different friends that they also pulled their children out because of same problems. Would not recommend am sending my child to their home school. Close Quote
