Summary

Dougherty Valley High is a large, elite public high school serving over 3,000 students in grades 9-12 within the highly-ranked San Ramon Valley Unified district in San Ramon, CA.

The school is a perennial top performer in California, consistently ranking in the top 2% of all state high schools for over a decade. It differentiates itself from other excellent local schools like Monte Vista High and Dublin High with its exceptional strength in mathematics and science, where student proficiency rates are notably higher. Remarkably, Dougherty Valley achieves these outstanding results efficiently, spending less per student than some neighboring schools and operating with a slightly higher student-teacher ratio.

While all comprehensive high schools in the area are highly rated, Dougherty Valley stands out for its stable, elite ranking and its effective support for all student subgroups. The school is part of a geographic cluster of excellence in the tri-city area, yet it maintains a distinct lead, particularly in STEM. Recent years show very slight fluctuations in some metrics, but the school's overall position as a leading institution within an already exceptional district remains firmly intact.

Open Quote The school provides the opportunity for the students to excel but they have to want it. Both my kids thrived at the school on the academic, artistic and athletics.. the student body is so competitive that they drive each other to succeed academically. Close Quote

Open Quote The academic and music programs are top notch. Very high level of talent demonstrated by the students. High percentage of 2011 senior class admitted to the the 6 top Univ of California campuses. 2011 was the first class of students who attended all 4 years at Dougherty. The school is posed to continue to improve and will likley become one of the very elite public schools in the state. Close Quote
