Summary

San Mateo Park Elementary is a public K-5 school serving 340 students in the San Mateo-Foster City School District, located in an area of stark contrasts where some of California's highest and lowest-performing schools exist within just a couple of miles of each other.

The school faces significant challenges, with its academic performance ranking in the bottom 6% of all California elementary schools; only about 10% of students are proficient in English and math, which is dramatically lower than nearby schools like North Shoreview Montessori (75% ELA proficiency) or College Park Elementary (78% ELA proficiency). Two major factors differentiating San Mateo Park are a high rate of economic need, with 64% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, and a chronic absenteeism rate of 29%, which is nearly double the state average and closely correlated with lower achievement.

Despite spending more per student ($21,386) than many comparison schools, outcomes have declined steeply over the past decade. The situation presents a paradox, as the school is surrounded by top-tier districts like Hillsborough City Elementary and Burlingame Elementary, suggesting the challenges are specific to this school's context rather than a district-wide issue, and highlighting a pressing need for targeted interventions to address attendance and improve instructional effectiveness.

Open Quote This school is comprised of caring, responsible, creative, and curious students. The pod structure of the school make it a cozy and nurturing environment with the library at its heart. The outdoor space, with it's garden, large natural lawn, two blacktops, large playground, and peripheral tree-lined area, is a haven for play. My colleagues are also dedicated educators who strive to meet the academic and social emotional needs of our diverse student population. Close Quote
