Summary

Walter L. Bachrodt Elementary serves 398 students in grades K–5 in San Jose, near several other elementary schools. Its clearest positive signs are improving science results and strong Spanish assessment results, but academic proficiency remains a concern. In 2025–26, 33% of students were proficient in English language arts (ELA), 26% in math, and 25% in science. Most importantly, Bachrodt was below both the state and San Jose Unified in all three subjects.

Science is the school’s strongest subject relative to the state, while ELA has the widest gap. Bachrodt trailed state results by 11 percentage points in science, 13 in math, and 16 in ELA; its gaps with the district were 15, 17, and 18 points, respectively. Compared with eight nearby K–5 schools with results, Bachrodt was below the average in every subject: 33% versus 38% in ELA, 26% versus 34% in math, and 25% versus 32% in science. Still, it scored above three of the four nearby San Jose Unified schools in all three subjects; Merritt Trace Elementary was the one that scored higher across the board. Bachrodt’s 2023–24 CSA Spanish proficiency rate was 20%, compared with 9% statewide and 17% districtwide; this is a separate assessment from ELA.

Science has risen from 17% proficiency in 2023–24 to 25% in 2025–26, while ELA has been nearly flat and math has increased modestly overall. Chronic absenteeism also improved, dropping from 31% in 2021–22 to 23% in 2025–26, but remained above the state’s 18% rate. SchoolDigger gave Bachrodt one star and a 28th-percentile overall ranking in 2025–26, down from the 48th percentile in 2022–23. For context, its 2024–25 student–teacher ratio was 23.8, and 61% of students were free/reduced lunch eligible that year. SchoolDigger’s statewide ranking for Special Education Students was notably higher: the 77th percentile in 2024–25, compared with the school’s overall 35th percentile. Its ranking for Low Socio Economic Status Students fell to the 11th percentile in 2025–26, compared with the school’s overall 28th percentile.
