Summary

Field Elementary is a K-5 public school serving 238 students in the San Diego Unified district, notable for its remarkable academic improvement over the past decade despite serving a population where a significant majority of students come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.

The school's story is one of impressive growth, having climbed from a low state ranking to the 74th percentile, now outperforming California averages in all core subjects, especially math and science. This success is particularly evident when compared to nearby schools with similar student demographics, such as Whitman Elementary, where academic results are lower. Field Elementary shows exceptional effectiveness with specific groups, including students from low socioeconomic backgrounds, ranking in the 82nd percentile statewide for that subgroup. While chronic absenteeism has improved, it remains an area for continued focus, and the school's high per-student spending reflects significant investment in student success.

Field's trajectory stands out in the area, demonstrating that strong outcomes are achievable in high-poverty settings. Unlike some higher-performing schools with more affluent populations like Curie Elementary or Holmes Elementary, Field and Sequoia Elementary show that targeted resources and practices can lead to solid academic performance. However, a notable decline in performance for English Language Learners indicates a specific challenge the school must address to continue its positive overall trend.

Open Quote My child is in the dual immersion program at Field and has had a very successful experience since he started in TK. The teachers are top notch and dedicated, there are amazing programs such as Art class and Science through gardening, not to mention lots of afterschool enrichment opportunities. Field is a wonderful place to be and I'm happy we choiced our child here. Close Quote
