Summary

Don Benito Fundamental is a public elementary school serving about 384 students in grades K-5 within the Pasadena Unified School District, performing solidly above both district and state averages in English and Math.

The school's academic results are strong relative to the economic needs of its community, but it faces a significant challenge with chronic student absenteeism, which is higher than at top-performing nearby schools like Field (Eugene) Elementary and Sierra Madre Elementary. While English scores are a particular strength, math proficiency is an area for growth, and recent performance trends for some student groups have declined, indicating a need for targeted support. Interestingly, the school shares a location with Pasadena Rosebud Academy, a charter school that performs significantly lower.

Don Benito exists within a stark contrast of school performance in Pasadena, where very high-achieving schools are located just blocks away, highlighting differences in school culture and community factors. To reach its full potential, the school would benefit from focusing on improving attendance and strengthening its mathematics program, possibly by learning from district peers like Hamilton Elementary.

Open Quote This school is the best we have been to after several moves. The teachers and staff are really caring and supportive. It is a great community with lots of activities like movie nights and the fall carnival, stargazing, assemblies. The PTA and annual fund raise money for supplies and extra staff to help the teachers and students so they have a full time librarian and a music teacher too. Close Quote
