Summary

Olivewood Elementary is a K-6 public school serving 424 students in the National Elementary district of National City, CA, an area where the district itself faces significant challenges, ranking in the bottom third statewide.

Academically, Olivewood performs below state averages, with particular struggles in science proficiency, and it ranks lowest among nearby district schools like Palmer Way and John A. Otis Elementary. However, the school has made a notable bright spot in dramatically improving chronic absenteeism, cutting the rate by more than half since 2022, though it remains higher than some peers. An interesting pattern shows that while early-grade math scores are competitive, proficiency drops sharply by 6th grade, indicating a challenge in maintaining academic progress.

Compared to local charter schools such as Feaster (Mae L.) Charter, which has much lower absenteeism, Olivewood operates with higher per-student spending. The school's performance has been volatile over the years but shows recent slight improvement, and it serves a student population with high economic need, which has grown significantly. The school demonstrates some targeted effectiveness, performing relatively better with English Language Learner and homeless student subgroups than with others.

Open Quote I love Olivewood. Their graduation last year was amazing! I also love all the parent workshops and PTA. The Principal and teachers are very nice and knowledgable. They really do care about the kids. Close Quote

Open Quote The preschool program is phenominal, however, the elementary school is a dismal failure. The office staff is at best unprofessional and the safety of the school is nothing short of scary. If you have an option choose another school for the benefit of your child. Close Quote
