Summary

Charles W. Barrett Elementary is a public K-5 school serving 473 students in South Los Angeles, operating within the Los Angeles Unified district, but it faces significant academic challenges, ranking in the bottom 20% of California elementary schools with proficiency rates in English, math, and science well below district and state averages.

The school's performance has become notably volatile, dropping sharply in statewide ranking this year, and it struggles with a high chronic absenteeism rate of 30.4%, which is a key barrier to improvement. Interestingly, Barrett spends more per student ($29,209) than nearly all nearby schools, including higher-performing ones like Figueroa Street Elementary and Ninety-Fifth Street Elementary, yet achieves lower academic results, raising questions about how resources are used.

Despite broader challenges, Barrett shows a specific strength in supporting English Language Learner students. However, comparisons to nearby schools like Watts Learning Center, which serves a similar student population with fewer resources but better outcomes, suggest that factors like school culture and instructional models are crucial for student success at Barrett.

Open Quote The school is very disorgarnized. The money allocated to the school is not utilized wisely. It does not appear that the well being of the students academic performance is at the center of attention. The school could be a lot better if administration would revisit their priority. For example, the school's library is closed the majority of the time, threfore denying access to students, teachers and parents. How are students supposed to improve reading skills and develop a love for books. Resources are denied to students, such as the library, when the school is trying to impress outsiders. The library is used for meetings when the auditorium is available. Close Quote
