Summary

Lockwood Avenue Elementary is a K-6 public school serving 285 students in the Los Angeles Unified district, located in a high-need community where nearly all students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

Academically, the school performs below district and state averages in core subjects, but it shows important strengths, particularly in effectively supporting its students from low-income families, ranking above average statewide for that subgroup. The school has also shown recent improvement in supporting its English Language Learners. However, there are challenges, including lower proficiency in early grades and a notable performance gap where male students are outperforming female students, which is unusual. Chronic absenteeism, while improved from pandemic highs, remains a concern at 20%.

Compared to nearby schools, Lockwood performs similarly to others with comparable poverty levels like Ramona Elementary and Kingsley Elementary, but lags behind higher-performing neighbors like Micheltorena Street Elementary. Interestingly, Dr. Sammy Lee Medical and Health Science Magnet Elementary serves a similarly high-poverty population but achieves stronger academic results, suggesting factors like specialized programs can make a difference. Lockwood's per-student spending is higher than some of these higher-performing schools, indicating that how resources are used is more critical than the amount alone.

Open Quote Special needs children are physically abused and emotionally neglected at this school. If you are unfortunate enough to have a special needs child assigned to this school, make sure you attend and audio record every IEP meeting (just give them 24 hours notice before the meeting that you are recording). Get in contact with a regional center (I recommend Lanterman) and read your parents rights handbook. They expect you not to read the materials and they will do things that are both unethical and illegal to save a buck and not provide your child with the services he/she needs. Close Quote
