Summary

Angel's Gate (Continuation) is a small, 80-student continuation high school serving grades 9-12 in San Pedro, California, as part of the Los Angeles Unified school district, designed for students who have faced significant challenges in traditional high school settings.

The school serves a high-needs population and faces considerable academic and attendance challenges, with proficiency rates in core subjects well below district and state averages, a graduation rate of 42.6%, and a chronic absenteeism rate of 66.4%. While these metrics are low, they represent a notable improvement from very recent years when the school ranked at the absolute bottom statewide, showing signs of positive momentum. It's important to note that the school receives substantial resources, with per-student spending significantly higher than the district average, indicating a commitment to supporting its students.

When compared to nearby schools, the context becomes clearer. Other continuation schools in the district, like George S. Patton Continuation and Dan M. Issacs Avalon High, show higher graduation rates, suggesting there are different outcomes within the same specialized model. Furthermore, the stark contrast with high-performing traditional schools in the same area, such as Dr. Richard A. Vladovic Harbor Teacher Preparation Academy and San Pedro Senior High, highlights the distinct mission and student population of Angel's Gate.
