Birney Elementary serves 731 students in grades K–6 in Fresno, California, as part of Fresno Unified. Its academic picture is mixed: English language arts (ELA) is a relative strength, while science is a broad concern. The most important academic caution is that the 16% science proficiency rate was low across the school, and fifth-grade math was especially weak at 14%.

ELA is Birney’s strongest subject against local and district results: 46% of students met proficiency, compared with 40% in Fresno Unified and a 38% average among nearby schools with results. Birney ranked third among those schools, behind Manchester Gate and Wishon.
