Summary

Alice N. Stroud Elementary is a K–6 school in Modesto’s Empire Union Elementary School District, serving 379 students in an area with 10 nearby schools in the comparison. The most important finding is that Stroud’s 2025–26 proficiency rates were below both its district and California in all three subjects, and it ranked near the bottom of the nearby group in math, science, and English language arts (ELA).

Math is the clearest concern: 19% of Stroud students were proficient, compared with 23% in the district and 38% statewide; only one nearby school scored lower, leaving Stroud 10th of 11. Fourth- and fifth-grade math were especially low, at 11% and 10%, respectively. Science proficiency was 17%, below the district’s 22% and the state’s 36%, and Stroud ranked ninth of 11. Attendance is a brighter spot: chronic absenteeism was 16%, lower than the district’s 24%, the state’s 18%, and the nearby-school average of 18%.

Results over time are mixed: from 2022–23 to 2025–26, math proficiency fell from 25% to 19%, ELA was nearly flat at 31% and 30%, and science rose from 13% to 17%. SchoolDigger gave Stroud 1 star and placed it at the 18th percentile statewide; among nearby schools, only Empire Elementary ranked lower. In 2024–25, 81% of students were free/reduced lunch eligible, compared with a 71% average at nearby schools; this is context, not an explanation for test results. Stroud’s 23.6:1 student–teacher ratio was within the nearby range of 20.6:1–26.7:1. One notable subgroup result: SchoolDigger placed Stroud’s English Language Learner Students at the 53rd percentile in 2023–24, compared with the school’s overall 20th percentile that year, a 33-point difference in its measure of how well the school serves the group.
