Summary

James Monroe Elementary is a K-5 public school serving 562 students in Bermuda Dunes, part of the Desert Sands Unified School District, that maintains above-average academic performance despite serving a community where a majority of students face economic disadvantages.

The school is a standout for its academic results, significantly outperforming most neighboring schools in English and Math. For example, it far exceeds the proficiency rates at John F. Kennedy Elementary, Herbert Hoover Elementary, and James Madison Elementary. It achieves this while managing chronic absenteeism better than the district average and using resources efficiently, with a higher student-teacher ratio and lower per-student spending than some lower-performing schools. Its effectiveness with students from low-income families is notably strong compared to schools with similar challenges like Carrillo Ranch.

Parents should be aware of two important trends. First, while still performing well, the school's statewide ranking has declined from its peak several years ago. Second, and most concerning, there has been a severe and rapid drop in the effectiveness of services for special education students, which is an urgent issue. The school shows a strong pattern of improvement in math between 3rd and 4th grades, but science is a relative area for improvement compared to top local performers like Gerald R. Ford Elementary.

Open Quote James Monroe in Bermuda Dunes is very under rated. In both 2018 & 2020 Monroe earned a California Distinguished School Award (one of 323 schools in California's 5,887 schools) - the only school to do so two years in a row in the Coachella Valley (three different school districts). Most recently Monroe also earned the highest educational recognition by the US Department of Education and named a National Blue Ribbon School - Again the ONLY school in the Coachella Valley (one of only 36 in the State of California and one of only 400 schools in the United States). Monroe is a designated Title one school. Great teachers, supportive families, great PTO and administration. Proud to support the classified and certificated employees and the caring community that makes up this great school. Close Quote
