Summary

Washington is a 393-student middle school serving grades 5–8 in Cloverdale, part of Cloverdale Unified. In 2025–2026, proficiency was 20% in English, 13% in math and 9% in science—below the district by 6, 4 and 4 percentage points, respectively. The gaps with California were larger: 29 points in English, 26 in math and 27 in science. The clearest concern is that results are low across all three subjects, with the latest year bringing sizable declines in English and science.

Among the four nearby schools, Washington ranked second-lowest in every subject: it scored above Mountain Vista Middle in all three, but below Healdsburg Junior High in all three and was mixed against Terrace Middle (lower in English and science, slightly higher in math). Math is its relative bright spot: its 13% proficiency was closer to the nearby-school average than its English or science results, though still below the district and state. Eighth-grade math stands out within the school at 19%, compared with 10%–11% in grades five through seven; it was also above Terrace’s 9% and Mountain Vista’s 8%, but below Healdsburg’s 37% and the state’s 36%.

Results have not kept pace with rising state proficiency over time: from 2022–2023 to 2025–2026, Washington’s science proficiency fell 6 points, English fell 1 point and math rose 1 point, while the state improved in all three. Chronic absenteeism moved in a better direction, dropping from 35% in 2021–2022 to 17% in 2025–2026. SchoolDigger places Washington in the 7th percentile with 0 stars for 2025–2026. Its reported free/reduced lunch eligible share was 58% in 2024–2025; this is an eligibility measure, not the share receiving meals, and California provides free school meals statewide. The student-teacher ratio was 18.2 in 2024–2025. Earlier SchoolDigger group rankings were notable: English Language Learner Students ranked at the 54th percentile in 2023–2024, versus 20th overall, and Migrant Students ranked at the 73rd percentile that year, versus 20th overall. These earlier results indicate stronger measured performance for those groups at that time, but do not show their current standing.
