Summary

Laurel Elementary Magnet School of Innovation and Career Exploration is a K-6 public school serving 434 students in Brea, part of the high-performing Brea-Olinda Unified district, with a specialized focus on preparing students for future careers through innovative learning.

While Laurel's test scores are above the California state average, they are consistently below the average for its own district and several nearby schools. For example, its math scores trail the district average significantly. A notable challenge is a pattern where student performance, especially in math, declines sharply in the upper grades. The school also has a higher rate of chronic student absences (15.4%) compared to peers like Mariposa Elementary (4.9%) and Brea Country Hills Elementary (7.1%), which can impact learning. This is happening as the school sees a recent increase in the number of students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.

As a magnet school, Laurel receives more funding per student than some district neighbors, but it is outperformed by several traditional local schools, such as Beechwood Elementary in the Fullerton Elementary district. This suggests the school's unique career and innovation programs may not yet be fully translating into stronger core academic results. For improvement, the school likely needs to focus on supporting students in grades 5-6, improving daily attendance, and ensuring its magnet theme directly boosts classroom learning.

Open Quote My daughter went from kindergarden to sixth grade and we couldn't be happier. Every teacher she had was dedicated and spent extra time with her when needed. We never felt anything but support from the former principal. The teachers go way beyond what is expected. We Love This School! My daughter has a love of learning and reading: Laurel had so much do to with this. We also love the diversity of the school. My daughter met kids that spoke almost no English and was able to watch them learn and grow fluent. Close Quote
