Summary

Aspire College Academy is a small, K-5 public charter school in Oakland, serving 206 students in a high-need community where nearly all students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

Academically, the school has shown clear improvement in recent years, moving from a very low state ranking to the 21st percentile, though its test scores remain below state averages. This progress is notable for specific groups, with special education and Hispanic students making significant gains. However, performance varies widely by grade; for example, third-grade math scores are strong while fourth and fifth-grade scores are very low. A major challenge is chronic absenteeism, at 36.3%, which is nearly double the state average and closely linked to academic performance.

Compared to nearby schools, Aspire's story is mixed. It performs better than some neighbors like Markham Elementary and East Oakland Pride Elementary, but significantly trails the highest-performing nearby school, Francophone Charter School of Oakland, which also has much lower absenteeism. Aspire spends more per student than most area schools, including Francophone, highlighting that resources alone do not determine success. The school is part of the Aspire College Academy District, while most comparison schools belong to Oakland Unified.

Open Quote My experience like any other. It has it highs and lows.
I can say I am extremely grateful to be in this community where I was a parent that had availability in being part of my child’s learning so anytime I had a concern, I would come in and I would get the support I needed. My child was very happy with his teachers and staff. Staff is the most important part of a school because as parents we are trusting to leave our children with complete strangers trusting they will assist our children as their own. Im grateful I felt “safe” entrusting the staff at ACA.
The classroom was usually a place where I wished there was more support with the children. I would’ve wished to see a teachers assistant because just like theres children that require more one on one and support, theres kids excelling and staying on the same level as others kids which they were not being challenged enough. Maybe thats an issue to be addressed to the school board and obviously requiring more funding to pay the extra teachers, but I definitely can say thats the only thing I would wished to see more of.
The community was unsafe, sadly. Oakland is rising in crime rates and its not the safest neighborhood. Theres a huge gate that remains open so that was definitely a concern. Yes there were times where I would see staff walking the parking lot but it wasn’t like there was someone assigned to guard the yard while children were in class. Close Quote
