Summary

Vox Collegiate of Los Angeles is a public charter middle school serving about 224 students in grades 6-10 in South Los Angeles, an area where many schools face significant educational challenges.

While the school's test scores in English, math, and science are currently below the state average, it is important to view this in context: Vox Collegiate consistently outperforms most other nearby schools that serve similar student populations. For example, its proficiency rates in English and science are the highest among all Mary McLeod Bethune Middle, John Muir Middle, and Samuel Gompers Middle. Furthermore, the school has shown a strong positive trend, improving from a 1-star to a 2-star state rating over the past few years, while some neighboring schools have seen their ratings decline.

Two key areas where Vox Collegiate stands out are managing student attendance and using resources efficiently. The school has the second-lowest rate of chronic absenteeism in the area, a critical factor for student success. It also achieves these results while spending significantly less per student than surrounding schools in the Los Angeles Unified district and even some other charters like KIPP Scholar Academy. Parents should note that performance can vary between different grades and student groups, and mathematics is an area the school is working to strengthen across all grades.

Open Quote I was led to believe my child would receive a rigorous education, but the school barely has books or computers and do next to nothing to maintain a comfortable learning atmosphere. I will be pulling my student out and moving to an LAUSD school that has basic resources and more experienced teachers. Close Quote
