Summary

Compass Charter Schools of Los Angeles is a K-12 alternative charter school in Thousand Oaks serving about 1,032 students, operating with a student-teacher ratio of 22.6 to 1 and spending approximately $14,138 per student.

The school demonstrates a significant strength in student attendance, with a chronic absenteeism rate of 9.1% that is far better than the state average and most nearby alternatives like Monte Vista or Century Academy. However, this strong attendance has not fully translated to academic performance, particularly in mathematics, where proficiency at 27% is below the state average and lags behind comparable schools such as River Oaks Academy and California Virtual Academy San Mateo. Science is a relative bright spot, with proficiency rates close to the state average and some grade levels, like 10th grade, performing notably well.

Families should note the school's graduation rate has been volatile in recent years, improving to 78.9% but having been lower previously, which contrasts with more stable rates at schools like Oak Park Independent. The school serves a population where over half the students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. While its per-student spending is in the mid-range compared to other local charter schools, the academic outcomes suggest a focus on improving instructional quality and targeted math interventions, especially in middle school grades, could be beneficial for student growth.

Open Quote I am extremely shocked with the lack of support from this program and how coordinators have no experience as educators. The school made a big mess paying for my children's course, had them enrolled in the WRONG GRADE LEVEL. My seven-year-old was in 4th grade and nine-year-old was in 1st grade. After months of complaining I was told my youngest would only be able to attend 3 classes. That doesn't even cover core curriculum. Close Quote
