Summary

Crowell Elementary is a K-6 public school serving 758 students in the Turlock Unified School District, consistently ranking among the lowest-performing elementary schools in California.

Academically, the school faces significant challenges, with student proficiency in English, math, and science far below both district and state averages. For comparison, nearby Walnut Elementary Education Center achieves proficiency rates more than double those of Crowell. A major factor is chronic absenteeism, with over a quarter of students missing too much school—a rate much higher than at schools like Osborn Two-Way Immersion Academy (8.7%) or Julien Elementary (15.9%). The school serves a high percentage of economically disadvantaged students, similar to neighboring Cunningham Elementary and Walter M. Brown Elementary.

Despite these struggles, the school spends more per student than several higher-performing schools in the district. It also shows relative strengths in supporting its Special Education students and English Language Learners. The wide performance gap between schools within Turlock Unified, from top-rated Walnut Elementary Education Center to Crowell, highlights that factors beyond funding and demographics, such as attendance and specific school programs, significantly impact student outcomes.

Open Quote My son attends this school and it seems like the principal has a personal issue with my child. She allowed my son to be choked out by another student and that student was allowed to stay but my son is geting kicked out due to attendance. The principal is very bias and unprofessional Close Quote
