Summary:
The two high schools in Ventura County Office of Education are in Camarillo, both serve grades 6–12, and enroll 76 students at Phoenix and 69 at Gateway Community. In 2025–2026, both schools were far below California proficiency in every reported All Grades subject: ELA results were 8% and 3%, compared with 49% statewide; math was 3% and 0%, versus 38%; and science was 0% at both, versus 36%. The most important shared finding is that both schools’ latest proficiency results lag substantially behind the state in all three subjects.
Phoenix leads the pair in the latest ELA and math results, by 4 and 3 percentage points, respectively, and also had the higher 11th-grade ELA result: 9% versus 0% for Gateway Community. Both schools had 0% in 11th-grade math. Gateway stands out instead for graduation: its 2025–2026 rate was 82%, 6 percentage points below California’s 88%; Phoenix’s listed rate is from the prior school year, so it is not a same-year comparison. SchoolDigger ranks both near the bottom of its statewide high-school rankings: Phoenix is at the 4th percentile and Gateway at the 1st percentile, and both have 0 stars. Attendance is also a concern at both: chronic absenteeism was 63% at Phoenix and 66% at Gateway, compared with 18% statewide.
ELA improved at both schools from 2024–2025 to 2025–2026: Phoenix rose from 3% to 8%, and Gateway from 0% to 3%; the two-school average gap to the state narrowed by 4 percentage points. Math changed little, and science remained at 0% at both schools while the state result rose. Other differences may help families compare the schools: in 2024–2025, Phoenix’s student-teacher ratio was 6.6, versus 10.6 at Gateway, and the share reported as free/reduced lunch eligible was 63% at Phoenix and 83% at Gateway. These are contextual differences, not evidence that staffing or eligibility explains achievement; the data covers only two school years.
