Summary:
Spreckels Union Elementary has two schools serving kindergarten through grade 8: Spreckels Elementary serves K–5 and enrolls 529 students, while Buena Vista Middle serves grades 6–8 and enrolls 321. Results differ by subject and grade: math and science are stronger at the elementary school, while the middle school has a slight edge in all-grades ELA. The most important shared finding is that both schools’ all-grades ELA results fell below the state in 2025–26 after being above it the year before.
Spreckels Elementary stands out in math and science, with 46% proficient in math and 40% in science, compared with 37% and 35% at Buena Vista Middle—gaps of 8 and 5 percentage points. Spreckels was also above state results in those subjects, by 7 points in math and 4 in science; Buena Vista was just below the state in both. Buena Vista led ELA, 49% to 46%, but both schools were below the state rate. Grade-level results reveal important differences: Spreckels fifth-grade math was 13 points above the state, while its fourth-grade ELA was 10 points below. Buena Vista seventh-grade math was 11 points above the state, while eighth-grade math was 10 points below.
ELA fell by about 8 percentage points at each school from 2024–25 to 2025–26. The two-school average shifted from 7 points above the state to 2 points below. Math and science remained above the state on average, but those advantages narrowed from 7 to 3 points in math and from 7 to 1 in science. SchoolDigger rates both schools at the 61st percentile and three stars for 2025–26; its histories show Spreckels moving down from the 70th percentile in 2023–24, while Buena Vista rose to the 75th before returning to the 61st. Spreckels has a 24:1 student-teacher ratio and 19% free/reduced lunch eligible in 2024–25; Buena Vista’s figures are 17.5:1 and 18%. These are context, not an explanation for results. Because the schools serve different grades, all-grades results are descriptive rather than a same-grade comparison.
