Summary:
South San Francisco Unified has 15 schools, from elementary through high school, serving families in South San Francisco. Districtwide results are close to the state in English language arts (ELA), at about 49%, and a little higher in math (40% versus 38%) and science (38% versus 36%). But averages differ by school level: elementary schools average above the state in math, while high-school math averages 19% against 38% statewide. The most important finding is how widely results vary among schools, especially in elementary and high-school math.
Monte Verde Elementary leads elementary schools in all three subjects, at 79% in ELA, 80% in math and 67% in science; it is 30, 42 and 31 percentage points above state results, respectively. At the other end, Los Cerritos Elementary is lowest in elementary ELA and science, with scores of 20% and 11%; the elementary math gap between the top and bottom schools is 63 points. Westborough Middle leads middle schools in all subjects, scoring 56% in ELA, 49% in math and 46% in science, while Parkway Heights Middle is lowest in all three. Among high schools, El Camino High leads with 70% ELA, 37% math and 47% science; it is above state results in ELA and science but 2 points below in math. Baden High (Continuation) is lowest in all three subjects.
Recent changes are mixed: from 2024–25 to 2025–26, the high-school average in math fell from 23% to 19%, while science rose from 25% to 31%; science’s gap to the state narrowed from 8 to 5 points. Alta Loma Middle improved in all three subjects, gaining 6 points in ELA, 8 in math and 13 in science. SchoolDigger rankings also show marked differences: Monte Verde ranks in the 96th percentile among California elementary schools, while Martin Elementary and Los Cerritos rank in the 7th and 6th percentiles. As context, the free/reduced lunch eligible measure for school year 2024–25 is 22% at Monte Verde, 70% at Martin and 62% at Los Cerritos; this measure does not by itself account for school results. Attendance also varies: chronic absenteeism is 4% at Monte Verde and 27% at Los Cerritos, while Martin’s 13% is below the district’s 14% despite its low scores.
