Summary

Monte Verde Elementary is a top-performing K-5 public school serving 517 students in San Bruno, California, as part of the South San Francisco Unified School District, consistently ranking among the top 5-10% of all elementary schools in the state.

The school's academic results are outstanding, with nearly 80% of students proficient in English and Math—far exceeding both district and state averages. This excellence is consistent for all students, including those from low-income families, those in special education, and English learners, who all perform in the state's top percentiles. A particularly interesting strength is the school's exceptional success with male students, who rank in the 97th percentile statewide. Furthermore, Monte Verde maintains a remarkably low chronic absenteeism rate of just 4.8%, a key factor in its success and a stark contrast to nearby schools like Los Cerritos Elementary (24.9%) and Allen (Decima M.) Elementary (28.2%).

Monte Verde achieves these results efficiently, operating with a higher student-teacher ratio and lower per-student spending than several lower-performing schools in the area. Its performance stands out even within its own district, where there is a wide gap between high achievers like Monte Verde and Buri Buri Elementary and struggling schools. The school also outperforms high-performing schools in neighboring districts like San Bruno Park Elementary, such as John Muir Elementary. This consistent, decade-long excellence points to highly effective school-specific practices and culture.
