Summary:
The three schools in Shandon Joint Unified serve students from kindergarten through grade 12: Shandon Elementary serves K–8 and has 167 students, Shandon High serves grades 9–12 and has 83, and Parkfield Elementary serves K–6 and has 11. The clearest shared academic concern is mathematics: both schools with reported 2025–2026 results were below the state, especially Shandon High.
Shandon High stands out in English language arts and science, with 50% and 44% proficient, compared with 37% and 17% at Shandon Elementary. High’s English result was 1 point above the state’s 49%, and its science result was 8 points above the state’s 36%. In mathematics, Elementary led with 24% versus High’s 6%, but both trailed the state’s 38%; High was 33 points below. High’s completion measures were strong: graduation was 100%, compared with 88% statewide, and dropout was 0% versus 8%. Parkfield’s 2025–2026 test values are suppressed by the state, so they cannot be compared.
Results improved in several areas, but not consistently at every school: from 2024–2025 to 2025–2026, Elementary’s English score rose 3 points while its math fell 1 and science fell 9; High’s scores rose 29 points in English, 6 in math, and 32 in science. SchoolDigger rankings also rose overall for Elementary, from the 19th percentile in 2023–2024 to the 42nd in both later years; High moved from the 37th to the 23rd, then to the 49th percentile. Student-teacher ratios were 16.1 at Elementary and 12.2 at High. Reported free/reduced lunch eligible shares for 2024–2025 were 65% at Elementary, 71% at High, and 46% at Parkfield; these are context, not an explanation for school results.
