Semitropic Elementary

The Semitropic area has one school, Semitropic Elementary, which serves kindergarten through eighth grade and enrolls 140 students. With no other schools in the area, there is no meaningful local school-to-school comparison. In 2025–2026, the school’s all-grades science result was much closer to California’s than its results in English language arts (ELA) and math: science was 33% versus 36% statewide, while ELA was 19% versus 49% and math was 5% versus 38%. The most important finding is that ELA and math results lagged far behind the state, while science was comparatively close.

There is no meaningful local top or bottom school: Semitropic Elementary is the area’s only school. Its strongest all-grades subject relative to California was science, 3 points below the state; math had the largest shortfall, at 33 points, and ELA was 30 points below. Grade-level results show a notable exception: eighth-grade science was 38%, about 3 points above the same-grade state result. Sixth-grade math was 0%, 37 points below its state benchmark. Among grades with reported results, ELA ranged from 14% in sixth grade to 33% in seventh, while math ranged from 0% in sixth to 10% in seventh.

Results changed sharply by subject between 2024–2025 and 2025–2026: science rose 33 points and its gap to the state narrowed 30 points, while ELA fell 11 points and its shortfall widened 12 points; math fell 5 points and its shortfall widened 7 points. SchoolDigger’s ranking also declined, from the 19th percentile in 2023–2024 to the 1st percentile in 2025–2026. Attendance is a more favorable comparison: chronic absenteeism was 14%, versus 18% statewide, in 2025–2026. The student-teacher ratio was 14.5 in 2024–2025, and 61% of students were free/reduced lunch eligible that year. These figures provide context, but the one-school area cannot show why results differ across subjects or grades.
