Summary:
The two elementary schools in San Miguel Joint Union serve kindergarten through eighth grade and enroll 668 students combined. In 2025–2026, both schools’ all-grades results were below the state in English language arts (ELA), math, and science; the two-school average lagged the state by 11 percentage points in ELA, 6 in math, and 15 in science, making science the widest gap.
Cappy Culver Elementary leads the all-grades comparison, scoring 42% in ELA, 37% in math, and 23% in science, compared with 35%, 28%, and 20% at Lillian Larsen Elementary. Cappy’s advantages are 8 points in ELA, 9 in math, and 3 in science. Grade-level results add important exceptions: Cappy’s fourth-grade math was 63%, 21 points above the state, and its fifth-grade ELA was 56%, 6 points above. SchoolDigger’s 2025–2026 rankings place Cappy at the 46th percentile with 2 stars and Lillian at the 27th percentile with 1 star; both percentiles fell from the prior year. Cappy has a higher student-teacher ratio (22.1 versus 18.1) and a lower free/reduced lunch eligible share: 48% versus 80% (sy 2024–2025). These figures describe different school contexts, not explanations for score differences.
