Summary:
San Leandro Unified has two middle schools, John Muir Middle and Bancroft Middle, both serving grades 6–8. In 2025–26, the two schools averaged 43% meeting the standard in ELA, 28% in math and 35% in science, compared with state results of 49%, 38% and 36%, respectively. Science was the area’s strongest subject relative to the state, while math was the weakest. The most important difference for families comparing the schools is that John Muir led Bancroft in all three all-grade core subjects.
John Muir Middle was the stronger all-grade core-subject performer in 2025–26: 46% met the ELA standard, 31% math and 38% science, versus 40%, 24% and 31% at Bancroft Middle. Its advantages were 6.8 percentage points in ELA, 7.1 in math and 6.5 in science. John Muir’s science result was also 2 points above the state; both schools were below the state in ELA and math. Grade results add a wrinkle: Bancroft edged John Muir in grade 7 math by 2 points, while John Muir led by 17 points in grade 8 math. Bancroft’s Spanish reading result was a subject-specific bright spot, at 9% compared with 8% statewide; John Muir’s corresponding result was suppressed.
Both schools improved in each core subject from 2024–25 to 2025–26, and the two-school average moved closer to state results. Average gains were 2 points in ELA, 5 in math and 9 in science; the gaps to the state narrowed by 2, 4 and 6 points, respectively. SchoolDigger’s statewide percentile ranking improved for both: John Muir went from the 45th percentile in 2023–24 to the 55th in 2025–26, and Bancroft from the 29th to the 40th. The schools had similar enrollment—969 at John Muir and 948 at Bancroft—and similar 2024–25 free/reduced lunch eligible rates, 79.4% and 79.0%. Student-teacher ratios were 21.4 at John Muir and 22.3 at Bancroft; these are context measures, not explanations for the score differences.
