Summary:
The five schools in Pierce Joint Unified include two elementary schools, one junior high, a comprehensive high school and a continuation high school. In 2025–2026, reported all-grades school averages were below California’s results in ELA, math and science; the clearest area-wide concern is math, with an average 14-point gap below the state.
Pierce High stands out in ELA and science: its results were 60% and 40%, respectively, leading the next-highest reported schools by 25 and 15 points. Its ELA and science results were also 10 and 4 points above the state, but its 22% math result was 16 points below. Arbuckle Elementary led reported schools in math at 32%, while Grand Island Elementary had the lowest reported ELA and math results, at 22% and 19%. Lloyd G. Johnson Junior High was below the state in all three subjects. SchoolDigger placed Pierce High at the 61st percentile statewide, compared with the 32nd for Arbuckle Elementary and 33rd for Lloyd G. Johnson. Current test results are suppressed for Grand Island science and all three subjects at Arbuckle Alternative High; the alternative school’s reported chronic absenteeism was 80%.
Reported school averages declined from 2024–2025 to 2025–2026 by 6 points in ELA, 3 in math and 7 in science, while state results rose in each subject. Grade-level results offer another distinction: Lloyd G. Johnson’s 7th graders were near the state in ELA and math, unlike its 8th-grade ELA result, which was 26 points below. Ratios ranged from 13.3 students per teacher at Arbuckle Alternative High to 21.4 at Arbuckle Elementary. All five schools reported free/reduced lunch eligible figures for 2024–2025, ranging from 67% at Grand Island to 76% at Pierce High; these are context, not an explanation of outcomes. Pierce High also reported a 94% graduation rate, compared with 88% statewide.
