Summary:

Pacific Grove Unified has two elementary schools, both serving kindergarten through fifth grade: Robert Down Elementary and Forest Grove Elementary. In 2025–2026, both schools’ all-grades results were above California’s in ELA, math and science. The clearest overall finding is that Robert Down outperformed Forest Grove in all three subjects.

Robert Down stands out for its stronger all-grades results: 73% in ELA, 69% in math and 61% in science, compared with Forest Grove at 61%, 50% and 49%. The gaps were 13 percentage points in ELA, 18 in math and 12 in science, with the widest difference in math. Both schools exceeded state results—49% in ELA, 38% in math and 36% in science—but Forest Grove’s margins were smaller. Grade-level results show an exception: Forest Grove led fifth-grade ELA, scoring 70% to Robert Down’s 63%, a 7-point advantage.

Recent trends offer a mixed picture: from 2024–2025 to 2025–2026, the two-school average rose 1 point in ELA but fell 4 points in math and 10 in science; the state’s math and science results rose 1 and 3 points, respectively. Science declined at both schools, by 11 points at Robert Down and 8 at Forest Grove. SchoolDigger ranked Robert Down 706th of 5,804 schools (88th percentile) and Forest Grove 1,428th (75th percentile) in 2025–2026; both percentile rankings were down 2 points from 2023–2024. For context, Robert Down’s student-teacher ratio was 17.9 versus Forest Grove’s 16.7. Both reported free/reduced lunch eligible for 2024–2025: 19% at Robert Down and 22% at Forest Grove. These school characteristics are useful context, not explanations for test results.
