Summary:

The two middle schools in Novato Unified serve grades 6–8: Sinaloa Middle enrolls 693 students, and San Jose Middle enrolls 559. Their latest reported results are from 2025–2026. The clearest difference is that Sinaloa leads San Jose in all three core subjects, by 16 percentage points in ELA, 15 points in math, and 13 points in science.

Sinaloa stands out at the top of this two-school group: 60% of students were proficient in ELA, 49% in math, and 46% in science, compared with 44%, 35%, and 34% at San Jose. Sinaloa was above the state in all three subjects, by 10 points in ELA, 11 in math, and 10 in science; San Jose was below the state by 6, 4, and 2 points, respectively. SchoolDigger also ranks Sinaloa higher: the 80th percentile and 4 stars, versus San Jose at the 54th percentile and 3 stars.

Recent score trends differ: from 2024–2025 to 2025–2026, Sinaloa’s ELA result dipped by 1 point while math and science rose by 3 points each; San Jose’s ELA fell by 2 points and math by 4, while science increased by 1. The state improved in all three subjects, and San Jose’s seventh-grade math was a small exception to its below-state all-grades results: it was 1 point above the state. Operating measures are similar, with 2024–2025 student-teacher ratios of 20.4 at Sinaloa and 21.2 at San Jose. The schools’ reported free/reduced lunch eligible measures for 2024–2025 were 42% and 56%, respectively; these are context, not an explanation for test results. SchoolDigger’s ranking history also shifted more at San Jose, from the 65th percentile in 2023–2024 to the 54th in 2025–2026, while Sinaloa moved from the 81st to the 80th.
