San Jose Middle serves 559 students in grades 6–8 in Novato, in a nearby-school group that includes middle schools from several districts. Its latest SchoolDigger standing is the 54th percentile in California, with 3 stars. The clearest concern for families is that its 2025–2026 proficiency rates in English language arts (ELA), math and science were all below state, district and nearby-school averages.

Science is closest to the state result: about 34% of San Jose students were proficient, compared with 36% statewide, while ELA was 44% versus 49% and math was 35% versus 38%. The school also trailed Novato Unified in all three subjects. The gaps are larger against nearby-school averages: about 23 percentage points in ELA, 22 in math and 20 in science. Seventh-grade math is a relative bright spot, at 39% compared with 38% statewide, but eighth-grade math is the clearest weakness: 29%, versus 36% statewide and 38% in the district. Nearby Sinaloa Middle also posted higher all-grade rates than San Jose in ELA (60% versus 44%), math (49% versus 35%) and science (46% versus 34%).

Results have weakened relative to the state over time: from 2022–2023 to 2025–2026, San Jose’s ELA rate fell 3 percentage points and math fell 5, while science was nearly unchanged; state rates rose in all three subjects. SchoolDigger places San Jose third-lowest among the 11 schools in the nearby comparison group. Its 2024–2025 student-teacher ratio was 21.2, higher than eight of the 10 nearby schools, and 56% of students were free/reduced lunch eligible that year, the second-highest share in the group. SchoolDigger’s statewide group rankings also show notable differences: Hispanic students’ ranking fell from the 41st percentile in 2023–2024 to the 27th in 2025–2026, while the military-connected students’ ranking dropped from the 66th percentile in 2024–2025 to the 15th in 2025–2026, indicating weaker relative standings for those groups than the school’s overall 54th-percentile ranking.
