Summary:

Hawthorne has 11 schools: seven elementary schools serving kindergarten through grade 5, three middle schools serving grades 6–8, and one high school serving grades 9–12. In 2025–26, the unweighted average across schools was 46% in ELA, 38% in math, and 28% in science; science had the largest gap from the state figure, at 8 points below. The clearest area-wide concern is science, although results differ considerably from school to school.

Ramona is the elementary standout, leading its peers in ELA at 48%, math at 52%, and science at 40%. The lowest elementary results were 37% ELA and 31% math at Zela Davis, and 19% science at York. Hawthorne Math and Science Academy led the full group in ELA and science, with 82% and 51%; it is the only high school, so its results are not a like-for-like comparison with the elementary and middle schools. Among middle schools, Prairie Vista Middle led ELA at 47%, while Hawthorne Middle led math at 30% and science at 22%. Bud Carson Middle had the lowest all-grades ELA and science results, at 36% and 17%; Prairie Vista had the lowest math result, at 28%.

Average scores rose from 2024–25 to 2025–26 by 1 point in ELA, 1 point in math, and 3 points in science, but the math and science gaps from the state widened. Hawthorne Math and Science Academy is ranked by SchoolDigger 255th of 2,137 California high schools, at the 88th percentile with four stars; its percentile fell 7 points over three years. School size and reported income measures do not make performance predictable: York has the lowest student-teacher ratio, 18.7, but the lowest elementary science score, while Ramona scores strongly with a ratio of 25.5. In 2024–25, free/reduced lunch eligible figures were 75% at Ramona and 95% at Bud Carson; these figures provide context, not an explanation for score differences.
