Summary:
The five schools in Bonsall Unified serve grades K–12 and enroll 2,274 students. In 2025–26, their unweighted school averages were 45% in English language arts (ELA) and 33% in math, both below state averages of 49% and 38%; the four schools with reported science scores averaged 43%, above the state’s 36%. The clearest takeaway is that results vary sharply across the district, with one school leading and another recording the lowest reported ELA and math scores.
Bonsall West Elementary was the standout, leading all three subjects with 61% in ELA, 57% in math and 59% in science. Its leads over the next-highest schools were 9 points in ELA, 15 in math and 15 in science; it also exceeded state results by 12, 19 and 23 points, respectively. SchoolDigger ranked West at the 80th percentile, highest among schools with a ranking that year. At the other end, Vivian Banks Charter scored 12% in both ELA and math, 37 and 26 points below state results. Bonsall High had the lowest reported science score, 32%, and the second-lowest math score, 14%; its ELA score was 51%, just above the state. Vivian Banks’ science result is suppressed, so it cannot be compared or ranked in that subject.
Average results improved from 2024–25 to 2025–26: ELA rose 1 point, math 1 point and science 4 points among schools with results in both years. The gains were not universal: West’s science score rose 15 points, while Norman L. Sullivan Middle’s fell 4 points. SchoolDigger rankings from 2023–24 to 2025–26 moved from the 72nd to the 60th percentile for Bonsall Elementary, while Sullivan rose from the 68th to the 69th. Context varies, too: free/reduced lunch eligible shares in 2024–25 ranged from 38% at West to 73% at Vivian Banks, while student-teacher ratios were 22.1 at West and 14.2 at Vivian Banks. High combines a 93% graduation rate—5 points above the state—with 14% math proficiency and 21% chronic absenteeism.
