Summary:
The five schools in Scott Valley Unified serve kindergarten through grade 12: two elementary schools, one junior high and two high schools. The clearest overall finding is a pronounced divide in reported academic results: Scott Valley Junior High trails the other two schools with test results in all three subjects.
Etna Union High stands out at the top in 2025–26, with 72% proficient in English language arts (ELA) and 57% in both math and science—22, 18 and 21 percentage points above state rates, respectively. Etna Elementary also exceeded the state in every subject: 59% in ELA, 50% in math and 41% in science, leading the state by 9, 11 and 5 points. At the lower end, Scott Valley Junior High recorded 35% in ELA, 33% in math and 22% in science, below the state by 14, 5 and 14 points. Test results are available for these three schools; Fort Jones Elementary has no supplied test-score rows, and Scott River High’s results are suppressed; the schools serve different grade spans.
Recent changes are mixed: junior-high science fell 19 points from the prior year, while science rose 8 points at Etna Elementary and 7 at Etna Union High. SchoolDigger percentiles also diverged from 2023–24 to 2025–26: Etna Union High gained 9 points, Etna Elementary gained 5, and Scott Valley Junior High lost 9. As context, 2024–25 free/reduced lunch eligible rates were similar at Etna Elementary (65.6%) and Scott Valley Junior High (66.0%), despite their different results; these figures do not explain the difference. Student-teacher ratios were 13 at Etna Union High, 19.8 at Etna Elementary and 20.7 at Scott Valley Junior High. Scott River High reported 100% graduation alongside 68% chronic absenteeism, a notable contrast for families to consider.
