Summary:
Huron has three public schools serving kindergarten through grade 12: Huron Elementary (K–5; 723 students), Huron Middle (6–8; 344 students) and Chesnut High (Continuation) (9–12; 35 students), all part of Coalinga-Huron Unified. In 2025–26, an equal-weight average of the schools’ reported results was 14% in English, 14% in math and 8% in science, compared with state results of 49%, 38% and 36%. The most important concern is that results are well below state levels overall, while Chesnut also has a particularly difficult combination of low achievement, high absenteeism and weak graduation outcomes.
Huron Elementary leads the three schools in all three reported subjects, with 20% in English, 26% in math and 13% in science. Its math result is 9 percentage points above the district and 12 points below the state; third-grade math is a relative bright spot at 40%, 6 points above the district for that grade. Chesnut has the lowest math and science results, at 5% and 0%, while Huron Middle has the lowest English result, at 10%. Chesnut’s other reported outcomes make it the clearest concern: chronic absenteeism is 79%, graduation is 63% and dropout is 37%, compared with state rates of 18%, 88% and 8%.
Results improved in some areas, but not consistently: from 2024–25 to 2025–26, the schools’ equal-weight averages rose about 3 percentage points in English and math and 1 point in science. The average gap with the state narrowed by 3 points in English and 2 in math, but widened by 2 in science; Middle’s English result fell 3 points, and Chesnut’s science result fell 3 points. SchoolDigger’s 2025–26 percentile rankings remain low: 14 for Elementary, 3 for Middle and 7 for Chesnut, though Elementary and Chesnut have improved since 2023–24. In 2024–25, free/reduced lunch eligible shares were 91% at Elementary, 90% at Middle and 89% at Chesnut. Student-teacher ratios were 20.1, 16.3 and 10.1, respectively; these figures are context, not explanations for differences in results.
