Summary:
Coalinga has seven schools—four elementary, one middle and two high schools—with 2025–26 proficiency results reported for five schools in English language arts (ELA) and math and four in science. The unweighted school averages were about 25% in ELA, 16% in math and 12% in science, compared with state results of 49%, 38% and 36%. The central finding is that every school with reported results fell below the state in every reported subject, despite sizable differences among Coalinga schools.
Coalinga High led all-grades ELA at 39%, 8 percentage points above the next-highest result, Sunset Elementary, and 10 points below the state. Nell Dawson Elementary led math at 31%, 7 points ahead of Sunset; Sunset led science at 21%, 7 points ahead of Coalinga Middle. At the other extreme, Cambridge High recorded 2% in ELA and 0% in math and science—47, 38 and 36 points below state results, respectively. The high schools also differ at 11th grade: Coalinga High had 39% in ELA, 11% in math and 12% in science, versus Cambridge’s 2%, 0% and 0%.
Recent changes are mixed: average math proficiency rose 2 percentage points and science rose 2, while ELA fell 1; the science gap with the state widened by 2 points as the state improved faster. Coalinga Middle made notable gains, including 6 points in ELA and 7 in science, while Cambridge’s ELA score fell 11 points and its math and science results remained at 0%. SchoolDigger statewide percentiles rose from 5th to 12th for Coalinga Middle, fell from 29th to 23rd for Sunset, and changed from 27th to 26th for Coalinga High and 2nd to 1st for Cambridge. The 2024–25 free/reduced lunch eligible measures ranged from 70% to 83%, with a 76% school average; student–teacher ratios ranged from 8.7 at Cambridge to 27.5 at Sunset. Two schools have no supplied test scores, and Cambridge’s enrollment is 48, so its results warrant caution.
