Summary:
Exeter, California, has seven schools: two elementary, one middle, two high schools and two alternative schools, serving students from elementary through high-school grades. In 2025–26, six schools have reported test results; Exeter Community Day’s scores are suppressed. Across the six reporting schools, average proficiency was 51% in ELA, above the state’s 49%, but 35% in math and 29% in science, below state rates of 38% and 36%. The most important finding is that Exeter’s results are uneven: average ELA is above the state, while math and especially science are below.
Exeter Union High stands out in ELA and science, with 70% proficient in ELA—22 percentage points above the other five schools’ average—and 41% in science, 15 points above their average. Its ELA and science results are also 21 and 5 points above the state, respectively. Lincoln Elementary leads math at 46%, 8 points above the state. At the other end, Exeter Independent Study has the lowest reported result in all three subjects: 33% in ELA, 25% in math and 8% in science—16, 13 and 28 points below the state. Its graduation rate is 91%, above the state’s 88%.
Scores rose on average from 2024–25 to 2025–26 by 8 points in ELA, 3 in math and 4 in science across the six schools with results in both years, though some schools and subjects declined. Wilson Middle and Lincoln improved their SchoolDigger rank percentiles by 16 and 17 points from 2023–24 to 2025–26, while Exeter Union’s fell 5 points. Elementary results also differ by subject: Rocky Hill Elementary and Lincoln averaged 54% in ELA and 45% in math, but fifth-grade science proficiency was 38% at Rocky Hill and 30% at Lincoln, versus 35% statewide. As context, free/reduced lunch eligible figures in 2024–25 ranged from 66% at Exeter Union to 90% at Kaweah High; these figures describe the schools and do not explain their results.
