Dos Rios Elementary

Public Grades K-8
Summary

Dos Rios Elementary is a public K-8 school in Tolleson, Arizona, serving 649 students as part of the Union Elementary District. Over the past decade, the school has consistently ranked in the bottom quarter of Arizona elementary schools, with a 0 out of 5 star rating from SchoolDigger.

Dos Rios Elementary faces significant challenges in academic performance, with only 6% of 3rd graders proficient in English Language Arts and 4% of 8th graders proficient in math, compared to state averages of 41% and 27% respectively. The school also has high dropout rates, ranging from 5.2% to 7.0% over the past few years, significantly higher than the state average. Additionally, Dos Rios has a high percentage of students (63.96%) receiving free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a high level of economic disadvantage among the student population.

Compared to nearby schools, such as Arizona Desert Elementary and Porfirio H. Gonzales Elementary, Dos Rios Elementary performs significantly worse on academic measures and has higher dropout rates. The school's per-student spending has fluctuated over the years, but this spending does not appear to translate into improved academic outcomes. Addressing the root causes of these issues, such as implementing evidence-based instructional strategies and providing targeted support for struggling students, will be crucial for Dos Rios Elementary to improve and better serve its community.

This school has possibly been the worse school I have ever dealt with. I have a 3rd grader that has an IEP. His behavior has dramatically declined since switching to this school. He now runs away from the school because he is so scared being there. They have allowed him to leave campus multiple times (he is 8). Teachers have called my son derogatory names to his face. That same teacher and the school principals solution to her abuse was to no longer have her alone with my child. I do not understand why an adult would choose to become a teacher if she has zero self control or why the school would allow an adult like that to be around children. My sons homeroom teacher, who I thought was really great at first, does not communicate with me about school events, my sons behavior, problems he may have.... nothing. I have to reach out to him despite our multiple agreements on having notices sent home or Class Dojo being updated on a daily basis so that my husband and I know how my son was, what's going on with the school, projects, etc. My son is special needs and I feel as a parent and an advocate for my child that they have seriously let him down. He is supposed to have another evaluation done by the schools therapist. I requested this in January. It is now May and I am still getting excuses on why it is not complete. I requested a copy of my sons IEP and his last evaluation report on Monday. I went today (Thursday) to pick it up and was told that the teacher was supposed to reach out to me and let me know they have to request it from the district (Of course, the teacher did not tell me anything) and they have spoken to Raquel at the district and they will have it by the end of the week. I just got off the phone with Raquel. Not one person contacted her at all from the school requesting any information at all this week. I am requesting this information because I need it to switch schools. I will be moving my child to another district as this school has put a horrible taste in my mouth. I have already recommended other schools to people I know that live in the district.
My son also has not learned anything new here. I ask what he did that day and he will say how he did a little bit of work and then they let him play on the computer from lunch till the end of the day. That is about 3 plus hours a day. On some days though it is education games that son states he plays on the computes. Most of the time however, it is watching videos on Youtube. I have asked for Youtube to be blocked from my child multiple times since December 2018. I requested it again when I heard about the death challenges that are being hidden in kids YouTube videos. The mono challenge. Something like that. Did that get them to respect my wishes and actually teach my son? Nope! They still have him go on YouTube EVERY DAY! My son is usually ahead of his class in every subject. Now since going to this school, he couldn't even spell "great" correctly. He couldn't answer basic mathematically questions that I ask him. He hasn't had a spelling test since before Christmas. There is more to all of this but I am running out of spaces. In a nut shell, this school does not teach.
Unless you are a parent that does not care to know how your child is doing in school, does not care about your child learning anything, then this school is for you. If you care about your child mental and physical wellbeing, or if you care that your child learns while attending this school then stay far, far away! The test scores speak for themselves. This school is rated poorly for a reason and the administration couldn't care less. Close Quote
