Summary

Charles Henderson High School in Troy, AL, serves 546 students in grades 9-12 and is part of the Troy City school district. The school has shown remarkable improvement over the past seven years, climbing from the 24th percentile statewide in 2018-2019 to its current 57th percentile ranking (3 stars) for 2025-2026.

Charles Henderson stands out as the strongest performer among nearby high schools. It outranks both Goshen High School (49th percentile) and Pike County High School (33rd percentile) in overall state ranking. The school's 11th-grade science proficiency (40.56%) exceeds the state average (36.17%)—a distinction none of its nearby peers can claim. Charles Henderson also leads in English proficiency (25.17% vs. 20.63% at Goshen and 17.24% at Pike County) and has the lowest chronic absenteeism rate (19.9%) of the three schools, though this remains well above the state average of 12.0%. The graduation rate of 90.3% is solid, slightly trailing Goshen's 91.2% but significantly ahead of Pike County's 84.8%.

While the school's overall trajectory is positive, challenges remain. Proficiency rates in mathematics (20.98%) and English (25.17%) still trail state averages, and the school serves a predominantly low-income population, with 62% of students qualifying for free or reduced lunch. Notably, Charles Henderson achieves these results while spending less per student ($9,746) than either Goshen ($11,387) or Pike County ($11,893), suggesting efficient resource use. However, the higher student-teacher ratio (18.2:1) compared to Goshen (14.2:1) may mean larger class sizes. The school has earned 3 stars for three consecutive years, indicating its improvement is sustainable, and its science program—a clear strength—continues to outperform state benchmarks.

Open Quote School is a diploma mill (way below average academics with a high graduation rate) that puts athletics academics. Administrators are corrupt. Headcount = $$$. Teachers are treated awful here so it is a revolving door. School is frankly unsafe with drugs, weapons, and fights common. Zero discipline. Parents do not care. We moved far away so our children would not be condemned due to this school. Beware of this place. Close Quote

Open Quote The teachers are cliquish. If you aren't one of the "chosen" ones, you will have a rough time here. Rules that other schools follow don't apply here.

They talk about how great they are, but the school is below the state average. Close Quote
