Summary

Moundville Elementary School in Moundville, AL, serves 586 students from Pre-K through 5th grade and is part of the Hale County district, a small-town school that has earned a consistent 2-star rating in recent years.

If you're looking at this school, the first thing to know is that it's a clear academic leader within its own district, often outperforming the Hale County average by 10-20 percentage points across most subjects. The school's biggest strength is English Language Arts—in the most recent testing year, 5th graders hit 75% proficiency, which actually beat the state average of 69.5%. That's a strong selling point for parents who value literacy. Math is a different story, particularly in 5th grade, where scores have bounced around dramatically—from a very low 7% a few years ago to a more encouraging 34% most recently. This volatility suggests the school may be working through some inconsistency in upper-grade math instruction, so it's worth asking about how they support students transitioning into more complex math concepts.

Compared to nearby options, Moundville holds its own. It's more stable than Big Sandy Elementary, just 4 miles away in the Tuscaloosa County district, which has seen bigger rating swings. Moundville also outperforms several Tuscaloosa City schools like Martin L King Junior Elementary and Skyland Elementary in reading, despite spending less per student. On the positive side, chronic absenteeism has dropped from nearly 19% to 12.4%, right at the state average. The school hasn't returned to its pre-2020 form, when it was a 3-4 star school, but for parents prioritizing literacy and a school that's a bright spot in its district, Moundville Elementary offers a solid, resource-efficient option worth considering.

Open Quote Most teachers are non welcoming, the school itself looks like an institution instead of an elementary school, No color. Our 1st day the principle didnt even cone out to meet us and when introduced to the teacher as hete is the new student all she said was ok. She didn't introduce herself or even acknowledge my child. Learning can be fun nothing about this school has been fun with the exception of a few very few teachers. Close Quote
