Summary

Lyeffion Junior High School is a small PK-8 school in Evergreen, AL, serving about 85 students in the Conecuh County district, where roughly 75% of students come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.

One of the school's standout strengths is attendance. Chronic absenteeism has stayed remarkably low—just 5.6% in 2023-2024 compared to the district's 16.3%, and 7.0% in 2022-2023 versus the district's 16.8%. This is a big win, especially for a school with high economic need. The school also maintains a favorable student-teacher ratio of 14.1:1, better than nearby Conecuh County Junior High School (18.1:1) and Repton Junior High School (21.5:1), while spending less per student ($11,493) than those schools. In early grades, Lyeffion shows pockets of strength—5th grade English proficiency (53.33%) and 5th grade math (16.67%) both beat the district averages, and 3rd grade English (52.63%) also outpaces the district.

The bigger challenge is a steep academic decline as students move into middle school. While 3rd grade math proficiency sits at 23.53%, it drops to just 2.86% by 7th grade and 0% by 8th grade—compared to the state's 26.36% for 8th grade. English follows a similar, though less severe, pattern, falling from 52.63% in 3rd grade to 27.03% in 7th grade before recovering to 43.48% in 8th grade. The school's overall ranking improved from the 7th percentile in 2024-2025 to the 16th percentile this year, but it remains well below its historical performance from the mid-2010s. Compared to Evergreen Elementary School, Lyeffion outperforms in 5th grade math and English, but lags in 4th and 8th grade math. The school's strong attendance record and efficient use of resources provide a solid foundation, but reversing the middle school decline—especially in math—will be key to future progress.
