Isabella High School in Maplesville, AL, is a PK-12 school serving 789 students in the Chilton County district, located in a rural community about 45 miles south of Birmingham.

Isabella has some clear bright spots for parents to consider. The school has made remarkable progress in getting kids to show up—chronic absenteeism has dropped from 22% to just 7.1% over three years, which is better than the state average of 12% and beats nearby Verbena High School (12.4%) and Billingsley High School (13.9%). Early elementary reading is another standout: 80.3% of 3rd graders are proficient in English, well above the district (60.9%) and state (64.8%) averages, and competitive with the best local schools. The school also does more with less, spending $8,326 per student—the lowest among nearby schools—while still achieving comparable or better outcomes than several peers.

However, there are significant concerns, especially in middle school. Math proficiency drops sharply as students get older: 45% of 3rd graders are proficient, but that falls to just 7% by 8th grade—far below the district (17.2%) and state (26.4%).
