Summary

Alexandria High School is a public high school in Alexandria, AL, serving 480 students in grades 9-12 within the Calhoun County school district, and it consistently earns a 4-star rating from SchoolDigger.

For parents, the most reassuring news is that Alexandria excels at getting students to graduation day. The school posted a remarkable 99.1% graduation rate for the 2024-2025 school year—far above the state average of 91.5%—and maintains a low chronic absenteeism rate of 8.4%, roughly half the state average. Academically, Alexandria outperforms both its district and the state in 11th-grade assessments across math, science, and English. In the most recent school year, 28.07% of students were proficient in math (vs. 27.21% statewide), 43.86% in science (vs. 36.17% statewide), and 41.96% in English (vs. 33.73% statewide). The school is a clear academic leader in its immediate area, with proficiency rates in all three subjects significantly higher than nearby Pleasant Valley High School, Wellborn High School, Ohatchee High School, Saks High School, and Weaver High School.

One of the school's standout strengths is its effectiveness with students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Despite 46.46% of the student body qualifying for free or reduced lunch, this subgroup has ranked in the 87th percentile or higher statewide for three consecutive years, earning a 4-star or 5-star rating. This suggests the school is successfully closing achievement gaps. An interesting comparison emerges with Jacksonville High School, located just 6.3 miles away but in a different district. While Jacksonville outperforms Alexandria on most test scores, Alexandria boasts a significantly higher graduation rate (99.1% vs. 90.8%) and lower chronic absenteeism. The one area for potential growth is special education, which improved from the 10th to the 52nd percentile in the most recent year—a positive trajectory worth watching.

Open Quote my kids have had extreme issues with bullies on and off the bus, school and bus faculty do not enforce rules as the code of conduct implies. had alot of harassment not only by students, but by teachers/vice principal as well. Assault, harassment/intimidation are big problems with Alexandria High School. the buses are loaded with elementary students combined with high school kids (which poses huge problems)and i have knowledge of a bus driver operating the bus while being under the influence of pain medications, causing the bus to leave the road several times. kids are unruly and sports are based on "who you know" rather than talent. I DO NOT SUGGEST THIS SCHOOL TO ANYONE! Close Quote
