Summary

Pike Road Junior High School in Pike Road, AL, serves 449 students in grades 7 and 8 and is part of the highly rated Pike Road City district, which ranks in the top 17% of Alabama districts.

This school is a consistent standout, ranking in the top 10% of all Alabama middle schools for six straight years. In the most recent ranking, it placed 39th out of 443 schools statewide, earning a 5-star rating. Test scores tell a compelling story: 8th-grade math proficiency is 53% compared to the state average of 26%, and 7th-grade English proficiency is 74% versus 55% statewide. The school also has an exceptionally low chronic absenteeism rate of 7.4%, far below the state average of 12% and a fraction of the rates seen at nearby Montgomery County schools like Bellingrath Middle School (47.4%) or Carr Middle School (20.1%). With a student-to-teacher ratio of 16.8:1, class sizes are smaller than most comparable schools, which supports more individualized attention.

What truly sets this school apart is its success with specific student groups. English Language Learners rank 3rd out of 103 schools statewide (97th percentile), a remarkable jump from the 52nd percentile just two years ago. African American students rank in the 91st percentile, and special education students rank in the 82nd percentile. While math scores are lower than English scores—a common trend statewide—8th-grade math is notably stronger than 7th-grade math, suggesting students experience significant growth during their time here. The one area to watch is performance for students from low-income families, which ranks in the 72nd percentile—still above average but lower than other subgroups. Overall, Pike Road Junior High School offers a stable, high-quality education that rivals the best magnet schools in the region, including Baldwin Art And Academics Magnet, which it outperforms in both 7th and 8th-grade math.

Open Quote As a parent, I’m concerned that this junior high prioritizes athletics and image over academics, especially in the honors program. Despite parents providing clear evidence of teacher incompetence, the administration's solution is always to suggest a parent-teacher conference. It's the administration's responsibility to ensure teachers are doing their jobs effectively—this should not be pushed onto parents.

This lack of quality teaching is detrimental to students who depend on honors-level courses to prepare them for future academic challenges. Without competent instruction, students miss out on essential skills and critical thinking development. It raises serious doubts about whether our children are in the right academic environment to grow and succeed. The administration needs to take responsibility and ensure students receive the education they deserve. I would not recommend moving here unless you have a football player or cheerleader with little interest in college readiness. Close Quote
